Together, they built a company that made extensive use of software to help shippers manage their freight. “Even as GlobalTranz grew into a massive success, I always knew there was a need for a private freight marketplace,” Andrew Leto said in the statement from Emerge. “And we have the best team in the industry growing this platform.” Besides Andrew and Michael, Jack Holmes, a retired CEO of UPS Freight, is vice chairman and Grant Crawford, a former FedEx Corp.

Trucking group partners with Freightwaves for new assessment tools

A Chattanooga-based startup that has set a goal of becoming a billion-dollar enterprise in data analytics, trading and coverage of the logistics industry has formed a new partnership with the Truckload Carriers Association (TCA) to enhance how trucking firms of all sizes can assess their performance.

This week it is joining with the carriers group and its TCA Profitability Program to track the pulse of the truckload market and give trucking firms data to compare their performance with other carriers. “FreightWaves has changed the transportation game permanently,” said John Lyboldt, the president of the carriers association. “This partnership was an easy decision for our association.

The new data sets will enable carriers of all sizes to benchmark their internal performance metrics against best-in-class operators.

Understanding Veterans Day

Today, Nov. 11, our country celebrates Veterans Day. Since formal celebrations will be Monday to provide folks a three-day weekend, perhaps the alcohol aficionados will have time to nurse their hangovers. Every American should know why we celebrate Veterans Day on Nov.
The day originated as Armistice Day on Nov. 11 a national holiday. World War II general and President Dwight Eisenhower changed the official name from Armistice Day to Veterans Day in 1954. Perhaps that’s why a perpetuating image of veterans on our special day usually features men and women in their Golden Years, hunched over, maneuvering their walkers or confined to a wheelchair, memories fading along with health.
It normally takes nine war veterans to support a combat veteran in the field, yet with the advent of guerrilla warfare and terrorism, there aren’t many so-called battlefields nor are there many rear areas of relative safety. With Vietnam being the exception, veterans are normally treated with the respect and dignity they’ve earned.
Furthermore, it is heartbreaking for Vietnam veterans to live with the awareness that many of our brothers and sisters died before they witnessed the positive change in public opinion.In today’s military, 3 percent of our personnel were born outside of the United States. Nevertheless, American military veterans are everywhere, and every family is touched in some form or fashion by those who serve. As of 2018, about 16 million living veterans served in at least one war with another 5.5 million have served in peacetime. Two million of those veterans are women.

Veterans Day is not the day for hot dogs and cold beer but the time to remember those who served, those who answered the call to duty so you didn’t have to. They did it for you.

Sincerely comprehend what you mean when you tell a veteran, “Thank you for your service.”

Regulations, trucking companies curb distractions

He said hes been driving for more than 40 years Since his career started, Hartley said his record shows him as being accident-free.What falls under the category of distracted driving for professional drivers is specifically defined by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, said Jamie Maus, vice president of safety and compliance at Werner Enterprises.
It says anything that is considered more than a push of one button is considered distracted driving or without a hands-free device, she said. The company is making sure its drivers comply with federal regulations and its policy – a very costly pursuit.So within the trucking industry, we spend about $9.5 billion annually on safety, Maus said.
The trucking company explains the price tag includes constant training and paid safety incentives.Otherwise, if authorities catch truck drivers using their phones, they can face a fine and/or a license suspension.If Werner Enterprises discovers a driver is using his or her phone, no first warning will be issued. That’s a terminable offense, she said, and many companies out there have that same logic.

Oregon’s trucking industry seeing shortage of truck drivers

CLACKAMAS, OR (KPTV) – Oregon’s trucking industry is suffering from a serious shortage of drivers, creating problems for companies shipping their product, but also enticing career opportunities.

James Stanchfield, who used to work for a carpet cleaning company, recently began a new career as a truck driver at IITR Truck School in Clackamas.

“I love to drive. I have since I was a little kid. When I get stressed or when I just want to clear my mind, I drive,” said Stanchfield.

According to the Oregon Trucking Association, there is a nationwide shortage of close to 50,000 drivers, which has local companies competing for a limited resource.

Stanchfield, for instance, got a job offer before he even completed his four-week course at IITR.

“We get calls daily on people needing drivers. Companies I never thought would hire entry level drivers are now hiring them,” said Amanda Watson, IITR’s School Director.

According to the OTA, trucks haul 70 percent of the nation’s freight, and close to 80 percent of the freight in Oregon.

A shortage of drivers means costs go up for companies shipping their products, and those costs are passed down to consumers.

“Everything they touch, everything they buy, everything they need, and everything they use is on a truck at some point,” said Jana Jarvis, president of the Oregon Trucking Association.

But the shortage of drivers turned into an opportunity for people like Stanchfield, who can step into a new job starting at between $19 and $20 per hour.

Freight trucking startup Shipwell gets a $10 million boost

A booming American economy coupled with failing infrastructure and a low-margin business reluctant to adopt new technologies have put stress on domestic logistics companies in the $900 billion market for U.S. Shipwell combines a marketplace for shippers to connect with freight companies and online tools to manage those shipments. In effect, the company is pitching a version of the proprietary logistics management toolkit that has made Amazon so successful, to any retailer or outlet. We coordinate the freight, we pay the truckers, we help optimize the fleets, says Shipwell president and co-founder, Jason Traff.

Those services and the companys growing business among small and medium-sized suppliers to the construction industry brought the Austin-based company to the attention of Fifth Wall Ventures, the Los Angeles based investment firm whose limited partners are among the biggest construction companies in the world. Shipwell’s full-service, digitized brokerage platform can streamline the way many of our Anchor LPs and portfolio companies approach large-scale freight shipping, the firms principal and newest Shipwell board member Vik Chawla wrote in a blog post announcing its most recent deal. The companys business isnt for big shippers that deal with thousands of shipments per-day, but rather the small and medium sized businesses that spend $100 million or less per-year on freight. And the small-fleet shipping companies that make up the bulk of the industry.

Beyond these, however, there are easy tie-ins within a number of key categories of Fifth Wall Anchors [sic] that regularly ship or receive freight—developers, of course, but also retail, office, homebuilding anchors. If you are doing $50 million in freight per-year then youre doing dozens of shipments per week, said Traff. Most of our freight is less than a truckload or a full truckload freight and its more long-haul. Supply chains were very complex and there was a lot of building to do, Traff said. Shipwell makes money by charging a commission on freight services and fees for its freight management software platform. This connective approach makes all of the difference in an industry with so many small companies at play, Chawla wrote. A surprising 89% of freight trucks in the U.S. are owned by carriers with fewer than five total trucks, and 99% of freight carriers possess fewer than 10 total trucks in their fleet. Despite the big business of freight shipping in the U.S., it’s actually a fragmented market of small businesses.

For us, safety is of utmost importance so for some time now, depending on the application, we have been using fifth-wheels equipped with sensor technology that informs the driver, via an in-cab display, whether or not the jaws have locked correctly, says Greg Morris Cameron Group Fleet Manager.
The G36 looks to have the goods and were very keen to try it out to see how it stacks up against our other units and make some comparisons. The G36 units have a longer release handle so the driver doesnt have to reach under as far and its a simple one-handed operation that requires much less effort. According to SAF-Holland, the G36 cast-iron fifth-wheels have a long service life, are low-maintenance, easy to operate and relatively light. As to the ongoing maintenance of the new G36 fifth-wheels, Greg says he doesnt foresee any changes to the regular servicing regime the company currently uses. As for life expectancy, Greg says he expects the new G36 units to last for the life of the prime movers, in line with the other brand of fifth-wheels the company runs.

Reality of a Truckers

Let’s just pretend for a moment, the trucking industry is perfect, all companies treat their employees wonderfully, all driving schools are reasonably priced and give top notch education, and everyone gets sick time and Holiday pay.

Now, you’re out on the road, you’re driving to meet an appointment. You’ve had to really rush to meet your time, but YOU MADE IT. You’re all ready to get going again and get some more “real good” miles for the week. But wait, the next load doesn’t deliver for 2 days and the destination is only 350 miles away. That’s only 175 miles/day…..or about $75.00/day. So you wait and hope your next load is a better one. It is, but the problem is you have to go 600 miles and deliver the next morning. Guess who’s not sleeping tonight? Oh, and remember you were supposed to be home this weekend? Well, you’re not. The load that was supposed to deliver on Saturday AM, won’t be able to accept until Monday early. You’re now out all weekend sitting, alone, and not being paid. (Remember, you get paid by the mile)

You end up with 2000 miles for the week and gross about $800.00. (That’s $0.40/mile) Take out Taxes, Insurance, Cash Advance for OTR living expenses, etc.. and you end up with about $500.00. You’re still out there away from home and you now have to do it all over again.
This is a reality.

Let’s sum it all up: You’ve spent thousands on your CDL. You’ve tried to be a good employee and get to your appointments on time. You’ve gone over on your logs, got a fine from DOT, a company safety warning, and did not go home for the weekend. Still sound good?
