Hot Shot Loading And Its Advantage

Hot Shot Driver Requirements

Hotshot driver requirements are different from traditional class-8 truck drivers. Hot shot trucking does not require a CDL (commercial drivers license) if the driver hauls truckloads that are under 10,000 lb. All hot shot drivers will, however, be required to file an MC number and have operating authority granted by the FMCSA.

Hot Shot Trucking Advantages

There are several advantages to being a hot shot owner-operator and much of them revolve around saving money in comparison to hauling flatbed freight. For one, the cost of obtaining a CDL can be expensive.

Training school and fees to obtain a CDL can cost over $5,000, making it appealing to bypass a CDL for some carriers that are just starting a hot shot trucking company.

There are however plenty of hotshot drivers that have a CDL, including those on the Rightnowloads.com platform. Depending on the trailer, these hot shot trucks with a CDL can haul loads to up to 26,000 lb. Regardless of the driver classification, all FR8Star carriers are required to have BIPD as well as cargo insurance with $100,000 minimum coverage.

Hot Shot Trucking Costs

Operating costs for hotshot carriers is far less than standard class-8 heavy duty trucking. For one, a new 20 ft flatbed gooseneck hot shot trailer costs around $5,000. Meanwhile, a new step deck trailer for a class-8 truck with a 50-ton payload can cost over $45,000. In addition, trucks like the Ford F-250 Super Duty can get around 15 mpg compared to about 5 mpg for a class-8 truck and can run on gasoline which is $0.35 less per gallon than diesel (according to the Energy Information Association).

Considering fuel makes up 20 percent of operating costs, the savings per mile can be tremendous for hotshot carriers, thus limiting the need for higher rates compared to a heavy haul carrier running a step deck trailer.

While it’s easier and cheaper to operate a hot shot trucking company, it’s also less lucrative. One of the disadvantages of hot shots is they don’t pay as high of rates as other flatbed or step deck loads might.

How Much Do Hot Shot Loads Pay?

Hot shot trucking salary can top $100,000 depending on how much you’re willing to haul and where you’re trucking loads to and from. As we’ve mentioned before, the operating costs for running hot shot loads are much less than those of other loads that may require a specialized flatbed or other open deck trailers.

Many times, hot shot freight on other load boards will pay less than $2.00/mile and could be even less in the event of a backhaul.
