{"id":1063,"date":"2011-03-13T03:01:22","date_gmt":"2011-03-13T03:01:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/findfreightloads.com\/blog\/?p=1063"},"modified":"2011-03-13T03:03:09","modified_gmt":"2011-03-13T03:03:09","slug":"underride-guards-fail-even-at-low-speeds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/findfreightloads.com\/blog\/underride-guards-fail-even-at-low-speeds\/","title":{"rendered":"Underride guards fail even at low speeds"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has asked federal officials to require greater rear impact protection for commercial trailers.On Feb. 28, the group of insurance companies and associations petitioned the <a href=\"http:\/\/findfreightloads.com\/blog\/cdl-a-key-to-successful-truck-driving-jobs\/\">National Highway Traffic Safety Administration<\/a> to upgrade Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards for underride guards, which are meant to prevent a car sliding under a truck or trailer in a crash.<br \/>\n<figure id=\"attachment_664\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-664\" style=\"width: 170px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/freightbrokerscourse.com\/\"><img class=\"size-medium wp-image-664\"src=\"http:\/\/i110.photobucket.com\/albums\/n114\/webmasterbob1\/man-thinking.jpg\"<\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-664\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Underride Guards?<\/figcaption><\/figure>Of course, some <a href=\"http:\/\/www.findfreightloads.com\/available-truck-loads.php\">trailers<\/a> are better than others, but there is no testing standard for evaluating the underride guards and their attachment points and hardware. Despite this, there is a federal <a href=\"http:\/\/freightbrokerscourse.com\/\">safety standard<\/a> for the guards, and there&#8217;s also a more stringent Canadian specification that requires the guards to be stronger and absorb more crash energy.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/photobucket.com\/images\/trailergif\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i252.photobucket.com\/albums\/hh10\/greg_in_london\/trailer.gif\" border=\"0\" alt=\"trailer.gif Pictures, Images and Photos\"\/><\/a><br \/>\nDespite major advances in passenger car safety since the mid-1970s, it seems the guards on tractor trailers still fail to reliably prevent vehicles from sliding under trailers in the event of a collision \u2013 a similar result to studies conducted over 30 years ago.In analyzing the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.findfreightloads.com\/available-truck-loads.php\">Large Truck <\/a>Crash Causation Study, a federal database of about 1,000 actual crashes from 2001-2003, the Institute determined that of the 115 crashes where a passenger vehicle struck the rear of a truck or semi, nearly 80 percent involved underride, and nearly half of those vehicles suffered severe or catastrophic damage.<br \/>\nHowever, it concluded the decrease was not statistically significant.
