Freight trucking startup Shipwell gets a $10 million boost

A booming American economy coupled with failing infrastructure and a low-margin business reluctant to adopt new technologies have put stress on domestic logistics companies in the $900 billion market for U.S. Shipwell combines a marketplace for shippers to connect with freight companies and online tools to manage those shipments. In effect, the company is pitching a version of the proprietary logistics management toolkit that has made Amazon so successful, to any retailer or outlet. We coordinate the freight, we pay the truckers, we help optimize the fleets, says Shipwell president and co-founder, Jason Traff.

Those services and the companys growing business among small and medium-sized suppliers to the construction industry brought the Austin-based company to the attention of Fifth Wall Ventures, the Los Angeles based investment firm whose limited partners are among the biggest construction companies in the world. Shipwell’s full-service, digitized brokerage platform can streamline the way many of our Anchor LPs and portfolio companies approach large-scale freight shipping, the firms principal and newest Shipwell board member Vik Chawla wrote in a blog post announcing its most recent deal. The companys business isnt for big shippers that deal with thousands of shipments per-day, but rather the small and medium sized businesses that spend $100 million or less per-year on freight. And the small-fleet shipping companies that make up the bulk of the industry.

Beyond these, however, there are easy tie-ins within a number of key categories of Fifth Wall Anchors [sic] that regularly ship or receive freight—developers, of course, but also retail, office, homebuilding anchors. If you are doing $50 million in freight per-year then youre doing dozens of shipments per week, said Traff. Most of our freight is less than a truckload or a full truckload freight and its more long-haul. Supply chains were very complex and there was a lot of building to do, Traff said. Shipwell makes money by charging a commission on freight services and fees for its freight management software platform. This connective approach makes all of the difference in an industry with so many small companies at play, Chawla wrote. A surprising 89% of freight trucks in the U.S. are owned by carriers with fewer than five total trucks, and 99% of freight carriers possess fewer than 10 total trucks in their fleet. Despite the big business of freight shipping in the U.S., it’s actually a fragmented market of small businesses.

Improvement in clearing of shipping containers following complaints last week

Following complaints by the Customs Brokers and Freight Forwarders Association that the processing of containers had been delayed resulting in its members having to pay increased fees, the port extended business hours late last week to clear the backlog.
Mitzie Gordon Burke-Green, President of the Customs Brokers and Freight Forwarders Association, told RJR News on Sunday night that the situation had improved, after the authorities extended the processing of containers by two hours on Thursday and Friday, and a full day on Saturday. On Tuesday, the Association reported a pending crisis because of the delay in clearing containers, which was getting worse due to operational changes at the port..

Reality of a Truckers

Let’s just pretend for a moment, the trucking industry is perfect, all companies treat their employees wonderfully, all driving schools are reasonably priced and give top notch education, and everyone gets sick time and Holiday pay.

Now, you’re out on the road, you’re driving to meet an appointment. You’ve had to really rush to meet your time, but YOU MADE IT. You’re all ready to get going again and get some more “real good” miles for the week. But wait, the next load doesn’t deliver for 2 days and the destination is only 350 miles away. That’s only 175 miles/day…..or about $75.00/day. So you wait and hope your next load is a better one. It is, but the problem is you have to go 600 miles and deliver the next morning. Guess who’s not sleeping tonight? Oh, and remember you were supposed to be home this weekend? Well, you’re not. The load that was supposed to deliver on Saturday AM, won’t be able to accept until Monday early. You’re now out all weekend sitting, alone, and not being paid. (Remember, you get paid by the mile)

You end up with 2000 miles for the week and gross about $800.00. (That’s $0.40/mile) Take out Taxes, Insurance, Cash Advance for OTR living expenses, etc.. and you end up with about $500.00. You’re still out there away from home and you now have to do it all over again.
This is a reality.

Let’s sum it all up: You’ve spent thousands on your CDL. You’ve tried to be a good employee and get to your appointments on time. You’ve gone over on your logs, got a fine from DOT, a company safety warning, and did not go home for the weekend. Still sound good?

Freight Railroads Get Boost from Tight Trucking Markets

U.S. railroads posted a 6.5% increase in intermodal traffic in March, according a report from the Association of American Railroads, making the month “Easily the best” March in history. The trade group said intermodal volume is tracking to top records set last year, with growth accelerating in April. The AAR said the number of truck trailers moving on major railroad networks expanded 15.3% in the first quarter from the same period a year ago.

The major freight railroads have captured the higher volume despite pockets of service issues in parts of the country where the carriers are dealing with hiring shortfalls and higher demand. The railway has been picking up cargo from trucks, with intermodal revenue up 19% in the first quarter. Volume rose 8% while revenue per unit rose 10%, a sign that shipping customers were paying more to get their goods on trains. “So we’re very confident that as the year progresses, we’ll be able to continue to lean into price reflecting the value of our service.” , which reported first-quarter results Thursday, domestic intermodal volume increased 5% on strength in parcel shipments and tight truck capacity.

Other lines of business, including the railroad’s refrigerated boxcar business, have also gotten a bounce from the tight truck market. Railroads tend to have longer term contracts with shippers, so changes in the trucking market may not allow them to adjust prices or go after new contracts quickly. I don’t win any awards for how many truck trailers I move on our railroad. Freight brokers who arrange transportation are also feeling the effects as customers switch some shipments over to rail.

Hub Group one of the largest brokers in the U.S. focused on rail shipping, said a 14% increase in intermodal revenue in the first quarter to $482.5 million, helped boost the company’s net profit 56% to $16.1 million. The Jacksonville, Fla.-based railroad it dismantled a hub-and-spoke model in favor of longer-haul routes that are more profitable. In the first quarter, CSX didn’t expand its intermodal volume compared with the year before, but revenue rose 3% on higher rates. CSX Chief Executive James Foote said the company is focusing on converting truck volume only if it can do so profitably. “I don’t win any awards for how many truck trailers I move on our railroad,” Mr. Foote said in an interview this month.

New smart steering wheels monitor heart rate to target truck driver fatigue

Fourteen-hour days and middle-of-the-night starts are not unusual for Goulburn truck driver Adam Craig.Long and erratic shifts aside, he loves his job.But they can take their toll.”Some days you could be happy as Larry for fourteen hours and not get tired at all, but then some days you could do two hours and want to pull up for a sleep,” he said.”You do have to stop and have a break, otherwise, things do go wrong.”But the 25-year-old said finding a safe place to pull over is far from easy, with parking bays often overflowing with cars and caravans.”Then we have to go even further to pull up, so it does get tiring,” he said.

Truck drivers are fifteen times more likely to die of fatigue than other workers.Last year alone, 185 people died in crashes involving heavy trucks on Australian roads. And fatigue, which raises the crash or near-crash risk between four to six times, is often the first factor looked at when a truck driver dies behind the wheel. That’s why Mr. Craig welcomes a pilot “smart steering wheel” that monitors a driver’s heart rate and fatigue, while also predicting the onset of tiredness. The idea was the focus of a truck driver fatigue hackathon in Canberra this week.
