He said the primary reasons for choosing to run a north-south route into the U.S. was because of how well the roads are maintained south of the border and the high number of rest stops for his drivers. Schuler pointed out that in the U.S., specifically the Dakotas where E2 Trucking operates, they do not pay for a health care system as is the case in Manitoba, which affords them more funds to be put toward infrastructure.

Terre Haute – One of the red flags that lead troopers to search a vehicle carrying millions of dollars worth of narcotics was that the electronic logging device that had been unplugged. In the past semi drivers have had paper log books that they would manually enter in how long and where they had been driving. The new electronic logging devices make that nearly impossible to do without showing obvious red flags. By 2019 all commercial motor vehicles will have to be equipped with electronic log books. That is good news for trucker Scott Courtney, before on the paper logs its time consuming as far as, you know, filling them out, doing the graphs, doing your notations and stuff on there. The E-logs, it pretty much does everything for you.
Drivers are allowed to work a total of 14 hours in a day but are required to stop and take a break after 8 consecutive hours of driving and can only be on the road for 11 hours a day.Drivers, you know they get paid money to have their hands on the wheels and make the wheels go round and round. It keeps track of, you know, it logs all your information for you. It just makes a lot of things faster, says Courtney.With the paper logs, drivers were able to easily forge how long they had been driving and where they had been causing issues on the roadways.
The new logs are making that more difficult, theres not a whole lot of ways around it, says Courtney.Law enforcement is strict on enforcing the regulations to protect both the truck driver and other vehicles on the roadways.When you have a vehicle going down the roadway that weighs 80 thousand pounds, that driver is fatigued or he is distracted, that becomes a very large vehicle with a lot of weight and if it does happen to hit somebody or hit something there is going to be a lot of damage, says Ames.
These vehicles go under full inspections when they stop at a weigh station or if they are pulled over for suspicious driving on roadways.That is when their log books are checked to ensure they are following protocol.

Outbound volumes from Los Angeles (OTVI.LAX) have climbed 12% in the past ten days, while Savannah’s volumes (OTVI.SAV) have skyrocketed an astonishing 127% since September 5.Spot rates out of Savannah have remained flat, as most of the moves leaving the port are regional and capacity stays in the market. Los Angeles has been a different story. While tender rejections (OTRI.LAX) have trended downward in Los Angeles all month, shippers have realized that it’s in their interest to pay for service. According to DAT’s RateView tool, dry van spot rates from Los Angeles to Dallas have averaged $2.07 net of fuel over the past seven days, a 13% premium against September’s average of $1.82. Rates from Los Angeles to El Paso have been elevated since June, and have trended up slightly to $2.37 net of fuel over the past seven days.
Eventually, we expect more volatility in Savannah prices. We’ve heard from international freight forwarders that steamship lines are pushing their East Coast services because capacity is so tight going into the West Coast; that may be why rates into Savannah have been discounted.Although Los Angeles’ outbound volumes are at year-to-date highs, so far rich contract rates and more trucks have kept prices under control. Trucking capacity in the Los Angeles market (TRUK.LAX) has swelled by 15% since May, compared to an increase in overall national capacity (TRUK.USA) of 5%.

A pedestrian was struck and killed by a tractor-trailer Friday night in the parking lot of a Rockbridge County truck stop.
Virginia State Police said they are investigating a possible hit-and-run at the TA Truck Center-Lee Hi Truck Stop on U.S. 11.
At about 9:20 p.m., Keith Alan Kinder, 59, of Richlands, was walking around a parked vehicle when he stepped into the path of an oncoming tractor-trailer, according to a news release from state police.
Kinder died at the scene.
The tractor-trailer did not stop and continued on its way out of the parking lot.
Reviewing video footage of the incident, troopers were able to identify a suspect vehicle and the trucking company it was associated with. After making contact with the company, police put out an alert and a truck matching the description was located in High Point, North Carolina.
State police were working with North Carolina officials to determine if the truck driver was involved in a hit-and-run incident, the news release stated.

This year has seen its fair share of autonomous trucking news, but the space shows little sign of cooling off. Earlier this month, a new competitor entered the arena, led by a team of industry veterans and backed by a prominent software company.
Ike, the latest company to emerge from stealth in the autonomous trucking world, wants to take a sober approach to developing the technology.
“We’re building a company focused very much on the long-term,” co-founder and CEO Alden Woodrow said. “In autonomous vehicles in particular, there is this tendency to really rush to try to get a product built. We’re trying to bring some patience and some maturity to this problem, in large part because this is a safety-critical technology.
“The trucks that Ike powers will be driving alongside many other people on the road, and we need to make sure they can do that safely and reliably.”
Ike’s name is a nod to President Dwight Eisenhower, who signed the Federal Aid Highway Act of 1956, enabling the construction of the Interstate Highway System. The company will develop technology strictly for highway driving.

USA Truck of Van Buren announced Thursday it has acquired privately held Davis Transfer Company and related entities of Carnesville, Ga. Founded by Harry Davis in 1959, the company has about $50 million in revenues and has been managed as a full-truckload carrier for the past 20 years by Gary, Bill and Todd Davis. Todd Davis will join the USA Truck leadership team as a vice president.
The company will operate independently of USA Truck as a wholly owned subsidiary.
Davis employees and customers should notice little change moving forward, a news release states. Davis was named Florida’s Safest Carrier in both 2016 and 2017. Davis represents a unique opportunity to add capacity, loyal customers and exceptional drivers all of whom are committed to the continued strong performance of the business,” James Reed, president and CEO of USA Truck, says in a news release.
“The Davis family has been a great steward of the organization, with a strong track record of success and profitability, and this partnership reflects the next natural step in the progression and growth of Davis.” The transaction will be primarily funded with the company’s revolving credit facility and cash on hand with a minimal equity issuance provided to Todd Davis to ensure strong alignment with interests of USA Truck shareholders, The release adds.

Its a truckers dream, said Terry Jobe, Director of recruiting and sales at Graham Trucking. Graham has been in business for more than twenty years and runs 45 trucks out of Grenada and Nesbit, Mississippi. For our eastbound freight going out of this area, instead of going through Memphis and all the traffic, now we can hit 269 and come right out at Arlington on our Nashville runs, and save our drivers and our customers probably an hour or so a trip, Jobe said. Officials with Graham Trucking say the opening of 269 will cut down on the amount of time a trucker spends on the road which means it will be safer and they’ll be able to get home to their families sooner.
Getting our drivers back home, as important as it is for home time for our guys, we want to make sure that we get them back as quickly as possible and that hour means everything to their families, said Jobe. Jobe says truck drivers are looking forward to bypassing interstates like 55, 40, and 240, every chance they get.
