Car Hauler Careers

Car haulers transport vehicles to various locations throughout the country. Car haulers operate different equipment depending on customer requirements. Car haulers can operate a standard semi-truck or may use a pickup truck to haul loads. Car haulers may own their own equipment, which can be leased to an auto carrier company, or use equipment provided by their employer.

10-Car Open Carrier
This is the most common type of carrier for transporting automobiles and offers the most job opportunities for car haulers. Car haulers use a semi-truck attached to a dual-level, 10-car carrier to move vehicles to their destination. Many times, the cars are from different customers and final delivery will include more than one destination that are often residential areas where unloading may be difficult. Car haulers load and unload the vehicles and protect them from damage or inclement weather during the transport.

Hot Shot
Some customers or private owners may only want to ship three or four vehicles to a specific destination. These loads are typically hauled by “hot shot” drivers who specialize in smaller loads known as “less than truckloads,” or LTLs. LTLs are defined as shipments weighing less than 10,000 lbs. Most hot shot transporters are heavy-duty pickup trucks or dually trucks that can carry heavier loads. Hot shot drivers typically work with a broker to obtain loads and find deliveries to return to their homes.

Enclosed Car Hauler
Drivers operating enclosed car haulers are employed by individuals and businesses interested in providing the most protection for their vehicles. Drivers may be transporting classic or antique cars that are expensive and need to arrive in pristine condition, and some race car companies use enclosed car haulers to transport their race cars to events. Generally, loads on enclosed car haulers cost more to the customer than the open carrier or hot shot loads. Enclosed car hauler drivers can haul one or two cars.

Flatbed Carrier
Drivers who haul flatbed carriers typically haul trucks or recreational vehicles that can’t fit onto an open car hauler or inside an enclosed trailer. Flatbeds can be pulled by a semi- or pickup truck depending on the amount of weight hauled. Flatbed carriers have to strap down their loads and load and unload the carrier. Most flatbed loads contain a single vehicle, but some customers may include other cargo on the load because of the high price of using a flatbed carrier.

Convert a Car to Run on Vegetable Oil

Diesel engines can run on three basic types of fuel: petroleum diesel, biodiesel, and straight vegetable oil (SVO). Diesel fuel produces carbon dioxide, pollution, particulates and sulfur emissions and increases reliance on foreign oil because it comes from petroleum. Any diesel engine can run on biodiesel. Biodiesel is a clean-burning fuel made from domestic, renewable plant sources, such as oils from vegetables, peanuts, soy beans, canola/grape seeds, hemp seeds and some grains. It has undergone the process of transesterification, a simple chemical modification of ordinary vegetable oil that makes the fuel usable in diesel engines and keeps it from thickening at colder temperatures.

Start with a modern diesel engine. Nearly any newer diesel engine can be converted to run on vegetable oil as long as it doesn’t have rubber seals in its fuel system (only older diesels use rubber seals). The rubber seals will deteriorate when exposed to vegetable oil over time because vegetable oil acts as a solvent.

Install a vegetable oil fuel conversion kit or have a mechanic do it. You should keep the original gas tank to hold regular diesel or biodiesel fuel for cold weather. Install a second tank for vegetable oil; these sometimes go in the trunk. The conversion kit should include hoses from the car’s radiator to the vegetable oil tank to heat the oil via a heat exchanger before it enters the final fuel filter and injectors inside the engine compartment.

Get vegetable oil. New vegetable oil is easiest to acquire but very expensive. Restaurants will often give you their waste oil for free. Chinese and Japanese restaurants are best because their oils comes out cleanest. The oil should be amber in color. Oil from other types of rest restaurants may also be suitable but could require more filtering to remove food particles. You will need a few containers for transferring the oil from the source to your filtering destination. The five gallon jugs that the restaurants receive the fresh oil in work fine. Restaurants are usually happy to give you these containers since it saves them disposal fees.

Filter the oil. Use filter bags that are rated to 0.5 microns thick. To increase the life of your filter bags, first allow the oil to sit in a barrel for about a week to let particulate matter settle to the bottom. Then, pump or scoop the oil into a filter bag suspended above a fresh empty barrel from the top of the barrel (since most of the food particles matter and possible water is at the bottom). Start your engine using regular diesel or biodiesel fuel from the normal gas tank. Once the engine and vegetable oil are warm (after about 15 minutes depending on weather), switch to allow the vegetable oil to flow into the fuel source.

Switch back to diesel or biodiesel a few minutes before you stop your engine for any time (about 10 minutes depending on the temperature) to make sure the vegetable oil is purged from the fuel line and injectors so that they don’t become clogged when the engine cools.

Span of Car Brakes

The brakes in a car are designed to slow down and stop the wheels by using friction that is applied by the hydraulic pressure of the brake fluid pressing a pad or shoe against a metal wheel part. Brakes slow the wheels of a vehicle in proportion to the pressure the driver puts on the brake pedal, allowing the brakes to be used many different ways depending on the driver. Brake systems are made up of brake clamps and brake lines, brake pads, and brake rotors.

Brake Lifespans
Judging the lifespan of any part of the brake system is complicated. Brake wear depends almost entirely on the driver. Brakes will wear out depending not only on how often they are used, but also how hard the driver presses on the brake pedal. Different parts and materials last longer than others. Brake fluid needs to be checked far more often than brake rotors. However, there are indications that can be used to gauge the lifespan of some brake systems.

Brake Pads

Except for brake fluid, brake pads usually need to be replaced more often than any other part in the brake system. The average lifespan for the pads is around 30,000 miles, but with very careful driving it could be twice that. If driving conditions are rough or the driver has bad breaking habits, the brake pads may only last 15,000 to 20,000 miles.

Indicator
Brake pads are equipped with indicator strips. As the brake pads are used, the indicator strips wear down until they expose a section of metal to the brake rotor. This metal is designed to create a screeching sound without actually harming the brake rotor. This lets the driver know that the brakes need to be replaced.

Brake Rotors
Brake rotors are the section of the brake that attaches to the wheels and helps slow the car down. Rotors are more difficult to judge in terms of lifespan. Typically the second or third time the driver replaces brake pads the mechanic will also inspect the brake rotors to see if they are worn out. Even then, the rotors might simply be shaved to smooth them again so they can be used for many more miles.

Clamps and Lines
The clamps and brake lines are designed to last throughout the life of the car. The exceptions are accidents and very rough driving conditions. Accidents can tear through brake lines, and bad collisions may dislodge the brake clamps. Rough driving conditions, such as a landscape with stones and boulders, may jeopardize the life of the brake lines as well.

Freight Trailers

If you are contemplating earning a commercial driver’s License in order to become a truck driver, there are several factors to consider, including what type of trailer you will be working with. There are several different types of freight trailers, each with their own features and requirements. Learning about the various semi-trailers on the road will help you prepare for and select the best CDL job for you.

Dry Vans
Dry vans are the most common type of freight trailers hauled by commercial trucking companies. Dry vans are the “box” type trailers used to transport general commodities. There are several subtypes of dry vans as well. A curtain side van is a type of dry van with sides made of heavy fabric. You can move the curtains, allowing easier loading while protecting the load from the elements better than a flatbed trailer might. Refrigerator vans, commonly called reefers, are another type of dry van. These trailers require special fuel and have thermostats to control the temperature for perishable freight. No special CDL endorsements are required to pull a dry van trailer, unless you want to haul tandem trailers. If so, you will need a “Doubles/Triples” CDL endorsement.

Tankers
Tankers are tank-shaped freight trailers used to haul liquid, gas or dry bulk freight. If you wish to drive a commercial tank truck in the U.S., you must apply for and receive a special “Tanker” endorsement on your CDL. This endorsement will allow you to haul dry bulk or liquids in a tanker, such as milk, juice or grain. To drive a tanker carrying fuel or other hazardous materials, you will also need a “Hazardous Materials” endorsement, which includes fingerprinting and a background check as well as an extra exam.

Flatbeds
Flatbeds are another type of freight trailer commonly used in the transportation industry. These trailers consist of a flat bed with no sides. Flatbeds are often used to haul building materials, heavy machinery and over-sized freight that would not fit into a dry van trailer. There are a few flatbed subtypes, such as lowboy and drop-deck trailers. These trailers have lower beds than standard flatbeds, making them easier to load with very heavy items such as construction equipment. Drivers must strap freight onto flatbeds and are often required to cover cargo with a tarp as well. While there are no special CDL endorsements needed to haul a flatbed, securing loads is a highly time- and labor-intensive undertaking.

Dump Trailers
Construction companies and related businesses often use dump trailers to haul aggregates, such as rock, gravel and sand. Other types of freight hauled in dump trailers include produce direct from the grower, such as potatoes or fruits. End-dump trailers have hydraulic lifts and dump the freight out the rear of the trailer. Belly-dump trailers, also called bottom-dump trailers, have an opening in the bottom of the trailer from which freight is dropped. No special CDL endorsements are required to pull a dump trailer, unless you want to haul tandem trailers. If so, you will need a “Doubles/Triples” CDL endorsement.

What are the Best Places to Live for Non-Drivers?

Millions of people around the world drive automobiles daily. People use automobiles for countless reasons, such as a commute to work, errands or pleasure. If you do not have a car, you may feel immobile or intimidated by your surroundings. There are many types of places in the world that allow you to live comfortably if you are not a driver.

Cities with Good Public Transportation Systems
If you do not have a car but need to travel long distances quickly, you will want to live in a city with a good public transportation system. A good public transportation system will allow you to reach most corners of a city by way of trains and buses. London, Paris, New York, Chicago, Hong Kong and Moscow all have fairly good public transit systems. Depending on your needs within a city, some will be better than others.

Cities with Low Crime
If you will be walking around a city without a car, it is important to consider the crime statistics for that area. A perfectly safe large city is impossible to find, but some cities are statistically safer than others. Some of the safer big cities in the United States are Austin, Colorado Springs and Portland. However, city-wide statistics may not be personally relevant if you will concentrate your life in a small selection of neighborhoods within a city. In this case, it is wise to talk to residents of those neighborhoods about any safety concerns you might have.

Bike-friendly Cities
Bicycles are a great way to move around any area, but biking in some cities can be quite dangerous. Some of the best cities in the United States for biking are Portland, San Francisco, Madison, Chicago and New York. As a city gets larger, it is more difficult to accommodate bikes throughout the entire city. Chicago and New York, for example, have certain areas that are much better for bikes than others, though both have strong bike-centered communities.

Small Towns
If the demands of your life are not excessive, a small town might be the best place for you to live without a car. Depending on the layout of the town, it could be extremely easy to get around the entire area by foot or bike. Some small towns, however, are extremely spread out. In this case, a car is actually a useful thing. Research the layout of the town before deciding to live there without a car.

Farms and Other Self-Sufficient Communities
There are many other living situations that provide sustainable conditions for non-drivers. Farms, while often involving some sort of machinery or vehicles for getting to places like a market, can be wonderfully self-sustaining in the right setting. There are also thousands of alternative communities and towns around the world that provide the necessities of living close at hand, eliminating the need for a car.

Posting Surety Bond

Government agencies will often require surety bonds to be posted for occupations where an individual is granted a higher level of responsibility. For example, most states require private investigators, process servers and title agents to post surety bonds in order to keep their license in good standing. A surety bond is essentially an unsecured insurance policy and can be drawn against should your actions damage another (physically or financially).

Determine the amount of coverage required by the institution requiring the surety bond. Also, be sure to determine whether the surety bond or power of attorney needs to be notarized, and the location to submit or “post” the bond. This information can typically be found on the institution’s website or by contacting them directly.

Contact a surety broker to apply for a surety bond. Many brokers are available, each with varying rates, so be sure to shop around for the best price.

Complete the application and return it to the broker. The broker will return a quote for the cost of the bond, typically within 48 hours. Several factors go into the price of the bond, but the most important factors are your line of work and credit history. Depending on these factors, rates can very from 1 to 15 percent of the total surety bond value annually.

Pay the fee assessed by the broker in order to be issued the surety bond. Brokers typically accept payment in the form of cash, check, money order or credit card. The original surety bond and original power of attorney will be mailed to you once payment has been received.

Do not sign the documents until you are absolutely certain that they are not required to be notarized. If they need to be notarized, take them to a notary prior to posting.

Take the surety bond and original power of attorney to the institution and post the bond. Sign the document (if not already signed and notary is not required) and give the bond to the institution representative.

What Can I Do if My Surety Bond Claim Is Denied?

A surety bond functions as a guarantee in a business transaction. The surety bond company works with the principal, or person guaranteeing to perform work, to establish a bond amount. When you hire a person or contractor who offers a surety bond to you as a guarantee of completing the project, you can feel more secure entering into the transaction. However, if the principal does not meet his obligations, you have to file a claim, which may be approved or denied.

How the Bonds Work
To obtain a surety bond, the principal must apply with a surety bond agent. The agent either approves or denies the principal’s bond. Once approved, the principal agrees to pay a set premium amount to the surety bond company. The principal will communicate with you that he has established a bond and give you a copy of the bond paperwork. The bonding company does not agree to pay for claims, but rather the bond functions as a type of credit. If the principal defaults on the bond and you file an approved claim, the company pays and obtains the money back from the principal.

Types and Benefits

There are many types of surety bonds, but the three most common types of bonds are the bid bond, the performance bond and the payment bond. When you hire a company with a surety bond, you have the assurance that the project will be completed on time, give yourself another layer of financial security and help assure you and your organization that you are hiring well-qualified contractors who are capable of getting a surety bond.

Claim Process
If the principal person named on the surety bond does not fulfill his obligation to you, you or your company can file a surety bond claim. The company who issued the surety bond will investigate the claim, and will pay the damages up to the value of the bond if the company agrees with the claim. The surety bond company then communicates with the principal on the surety bond to receive payment for the claim. The surety company can refuse payment on the bond, and you must then contact the company yourself or through your attorney to request payment.

Claim Denial
A strongly worded letter or threatened lawsuit from your attorney may be enough to cause the surety bond company to approve the claim, provided you have complied with all the requirements on the bond and are able to prove that you did not receive the services or payments promised. However, a Virginia court case in 2007 examined whether the bond obligation was null if the claimant did not file notice in a timely manner. The court ruled in favor of the surety company, because the claimant did not follow the notification process laid out in the bond.

Considerations
When using a surety bond during a contractual process, make certain you have your attorney review the language of the bond. Make note of deadlines for claims, types of contractual breaches covered and how claims are processed and researched. If you cannot afford an attorney, and the amount of the surety bond falls under the small claims court limit in your state, you may file a breach of contract case with the small claims court in your local court.

Transportation Sales Techniques

Transportation is physically moving goods from one location to another. Selling transportation means providing customers with optimum service for an agreed-upon price. Although some customers may enjoy knowing the details of how a package moves by air, ground or overseas cargo container, most are not interested in how transportation works. What customers want to know is, “When and how much?” Transportation sales will try to answer this quickly, accurately and, most important, more competitively than the competition.

Price
Transportation pricing is based on weight and distance. As weight and distance increase, prices go up. The transportation salesperson will provide quotes for shipping to the customer. As with all sales, the salesperson’s job involves name recognition and response as much as the actual product or service delivered. Promptly providing pricing for cargo will lead to customers preferring the salesperson’s company over others that may be slightly less expensive but that are slow on returning needed information. Moving cargo is definitely not suited to waiting for someone to get back with a quote.

Transportation salespersons will know the bottom line for the company to make a profit, and possibly to insure a minimum commission for themselves. The salesperson will then take the base amount and, knowing the customer and the customer’s expectations, add an additional markup that is best for the company but low enough to ensure the order.

Scheduling
A pickup and delivery schedule tells the customer when the cargo will leave and when it will arrive at its destination. Not every transportation company will be able to meet all schedule demands. The salesperson’s job is to coordinate the service availability with the customer’s need to move a shipment in a specific time frame. When regularly scheduled air transport will not meet the deadline, then the salesperson will look at over-the-road transport.

Overseas transport can be the most exasperating to schedule because of ship traffic and intervening ports of call before arriving at a destination. If the cargo is the right size and weight, then airfreight may work much faster. If weight, size and total costs prevent using expensive airfreight, then the salesperson will have to use pervasive people skills to convince the customer that the shipping order will have to be changed. For the successful transportation salesperson, part of the job is explaining to customers that not all their demands are feasible while still getting the orders from the customers.

Packaging
Transportation salespersons also sell packaging and shipping readiness services. These can include crating, pallet loading, strapping, loading and the like. Although many large companies have their own departments preparing cargo for shipping, some smaller companies will need such services from outside. The transportation salesperson will again price for maximum profit while keeping the cost low enough to insure the customer’s order.

Strategies for Trucking

Trucking Industry plays an important role in providing transportation and distribution service in American economy. It transports and distributes commercial as well as industrial goods by using commercial motor vehicles (CMV), which are most often trucks. You will be amazed to know that over eighty per cent of all communities in the US depend on trucking industry to deliver all of their fuel, medicine, clothing and other consumer goods. The trucking industry employs approximately 10 million people out of a total population of 300 million in jobs that relate directly to trucking. Trucking is a profession that requires patience, diligence and solitude. It is not an easy profession to take part in because of its competitiveness as well as the long hours that it requires. To be successful as a trucker, you can try several strategies to make yourself both more patient and more effective on the road.

Patience
Patience during those long hours on the road is essential. It is easy for a trucker to lose control of himself and succumb to road rage over a minor infraction of another driver. Road rage for truckers is much more dangerous than for drivers of normal-sized cars because semi-trucks command so much space on the road. You have to be able to overlook the actions of other drivers and just focus on your own driving. As long as you drive defensively and patiently, you will be effective and safe on the road.
Speed
Keep in mind that, as a trucker, you are not paid by the hour, but the mile. So a trip of 500 miles will pay the same if you finish it in one day or two. Do not needlessly stop too many times. However, you must maintain a balance between speed and safety. Even though you may be in a hurry to get to your destination, you need to keep in mind that you have a massive metal trailer at your back and failure to heed those around you can cause a lot of problems. Stay safe, but do not dillydally.
Keep Busy
Long hours on the road will cause you to get drowsy. It is always a good idea to bring something along with you that will keep you awake during the long hours on the road. Music, of course, is a good thing to have. Some truckers might find that a book on tape works better. One thing that seems to work the best is sunflower seeds. Eating sunflower seeds causes your cognitive processes to continue working because you are doing something other than sitting. Take a bag of seeds on your trip, and staying awake should be simple. You will also find that the trip tends to go faster.

Shippers As Customers

Shippers are companies that have a product that needs to be transported from one place to another via truck, rail, air or cargo ship. Freight brokers serve as intermediaries between the shipper and the transportation company, but a transportation company is not required to go through a broker to get a shipper as a customer. Both brokers and transportation companies use the same methods to get shippers as customers, however. Calling companies and offering proof of your experience the way to get new business.
[box]
Determine the commodity to be shipped by researching the shipping company. Look at the company’s website to determine the products shipped. For example, if the product is food, find out if the food is canned or shipped fresh.[/box]

[box]Contact the shipper and ask for the freight manager, transportation manager or transportation department. If the product is canned, it can be transported on a non-refrigerated truck. However, if the product is fresh, a reefer, or refrigerated truck, is needed. In addition, the product must be transported at a specific temperature.[/box]

[box]Ask the freight manager if the company’s products are shipped out-of-state or in-town. If the products are shipped out-of-state, ask the start and end points of the loads.[/box]

[box]Offer to send the shipper the details about your transportation company. Obtain the contact information for the shipper. The package should contain the Motor Carriers (MC) number, insurance information, credit references and contact information.[/box]

[box]Contact the shipper in three days. This gives the freight manager enough time to receive and review the package.[/box]
