Surface transportation trade between the United States and its North American Free Trade Agreement partners Canada and Mexico increased 15.6 percent in March over March 2010 to $80.8 billion, according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics of the U.S. Department of Transportation.
The March total was the largest month since data collection began in 1994, beating the previous record set in April 2008 by 8.8 percent. BTS reported the freight value in March rose 21.5 percent from February.
U.S.–Canada surface transportation trade totaled $48.7 billion in March, up 15.7 percent from March 2010. U.S.–Mexico surface transportation trade gained 15.3 percent to $32.1 billion in March compared with a year earlier.
Transportation of freight has been the most tough job since the time of industrial revolution. Company logistics system has transformed and evolved a lot since the onset of modern industrial era. This evolution was actually possible simply because of the induction of technology in this system. Out of the quite a few technological changes adopted by the logistics system, the modern trucking software technologies has turn out to be the most effective instrument of transformation. Trucking software has brought out a significant improvement in the functioning of the overall transportation system. With the help of this advanced software technology, the trucking industry has been providing a substantial contribution in the development and evolution of the company logistics system.
Trucking software has significantly contributed in the improvement of the functioning of freight transportation system. This software is created in a extremely organized manner, in-order to allow the trucking firms to efficiently manage their business operations. Trucking software contains a variety of vital features to manage practically all the critical processes involved in handling the trucking company. There are specially designed features to maintain invoice, pay reports and accounts related to the trucking organization. Moreover, all the trading and documentation records can also be maintained via this software. This newly found efficiency in the trucking organization is not only enhancing the revenues of the numerous trucking organizations, but has also led to an overall growth and development of the whole transportation system.
Trucking software has induced a systematic arrangement in the operations of the transportation system for the growth and development of industries, within the economic framework of a nation. All the organization operations of the trucking business could now be effectively carried out with the help of this new technology. Increased efficiency in the system of transportation would not only lead to the growth and development of numerous economies across the globe, but will also incorporate new innovations in the functioning of overall trucking industry.
North Dakota and Kentucky have temporarily suspended some trucking regulations to aid in emergency efforts. On May 3, North Dakota Gov. Jack Dalrymple issued an executive order waiving hours-of-service and weight restrictions for truckers assisting in recovery from the weekend’s storm.
The suspension of these regulations applies to vehicles delivering food, water, medicine and other critical supplies. It extends to vehicles engaged in restoration of public utilities, including waste disposal and debris removal.
The HOS waiver is effective until 11:59 p.m. May 31 or for the duration of the storm emergency.
Kentucky Transportation Secretary Mike Hancock signed an order April 29 temporarily lifting certain regulatory restrictions on motor carriers and utility vehicles providing disaster response, including those traveling through the state to provide assistance to other states.
At least 35 federal lawmakers have signed a draft of a letter to Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood protesting the DOT proposal for a cross-border trucking program with Mexico. The April 27 draft written by Congressmen Duncan Hunter (R-Calif.) and Daniel Lipinski (D-Ill.) is signed by 35 to 40 congressional members, said Hunter spokesman Joe Kasper. The plan is “bad for American truckers and the entire commercial trucking industry,” Hunter wrote.
“The proposal is an undue burden on taxpayers, including buying and monitoring electronic on-board recorders the department will require for Mexican trucks involved in the program,” he wrote. “The cross-border trucking program is a straight handout to Mexico at the expense of American jobs, taxpayer dollars and security,” he stated. The agency has said it is funding EOBRs to ensure it will own and control data gathered by the devices. Over a three-year period, the department estimated this program will cost $2.5 million, which includes $750,000 during the first full year of the program.
This article is intended to raise the concern about teen driving fatalities and what can be done to drastically reduce this alarming statistic. While this article may be sensitive to some readers in certain industries, we would like to raise the question as to what can be done to make our teens better drivers and how to alert others on the road that a new driver is behind the wheel.
Human life is precious and we must do everything reasonable to prevent deaths. Raising the driving age will cut the number of accidents on the roads. Teenage drivers are much more likely to have accidents than older drivers.
Young drivers do have more accidents, but that is because they are not very experienced, not simply because they are under 18. If we raise the driving age, it will be 18-19 year old new drivers having more accidents instead of 16-17 year old. After all, men are 77% more likely than women to kill someone while at the wheel, so if we went just by statistics we would ban all male drivers.
The age at which you can legally drive varies from country to country, but in many places it is lower than 18. In some American states it is 15 or younger. Usually you are allowed to take a driving test a year or more before you can vote or drink alcohol. As young drivers are the ones most likely to have accidents, from time to time there are calls to raise the driving age. So what do you think? Should minimum driving age be raised to 18?
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has announced proposal details of cross-border trucking project with Mexico, which will require fewer participants and equip participating Mexican trucks with GPS or electronic on-board recorders. The FMCSA’s April 8 plan for a cross-border trucking project with Mexico otherwise contained few details not already disclosed by Mexican or U.S. officials or contained in the previous program Congress ended in 2009.
The agency’s notice and request for comment on the plan will be published soon in the Federal Register. After that, the public will have 30 days to comment. The FMCSA will formally respond to feedback and consider public comment in forming its final program. The agency anticipates an average of one long-haul border crossing per week per truck with each Mexican carrier having two trucks participating in the program. It assumes an attrition rate of 25 percent after 18 months in the project and calculates 46 carriers will suffice to achieve a target of 4,100 inspections within three years.
Federal truck weight reform legislation that would give each state the flexibility to raise interstate weight limits has been reintroduced in the U.S. Senate. The Safe and Efficient Transportation Act (S. 747) is sponsored by Sens. Mike Crapo (R-Idaho), Herb Kohl (D-Wis.), Susan Collins (R-Maine) and Rob Portman (R-Ohio).Like identical companion legislation pending in the House of Representatives, SETA would give each state the option to raise interstate weight limits selectively from 80,000 pounds to up to 97,000 pounds. The higher limit applies only to vehicles equipped with six axles instead of the typical five. The additional axle would not affect truck size, but would allow shippers to use extra cargo space.
“SETA is a narrowly drawn bill that enables companies to move a given amount of product in fewer vehicles without adding more weight per tire or increasing stopping distances,” said John Runyan, executive director for the Coalition for Transportation Productivity, a group of more than 180 shippers and allied associations backing the legislation. The American Trucking Associations previously has estimated that the trucking industry will haul 30 percent more tonnage in 2021 than it does today. If current weight restrictions remain the same, ATA estimated the U.S. economy will require 18 percent more trucks on the road driving 27 percent more miles than they do now. Runyan said SETA would help correct this imbalance by allowing shippers to reduce truckloads, fuel, emissions and vehicle miles traveled for each ton of freight shipped.
With so many vehicles on the road, pedestrians need to be aware of their surroundings and the “rules of the road” to avoid being hit by a car or other motor vehicle. Nighttime is a particularly dangerous time because visibility is reduced, and both pedestrians and drivers may be more likely to have been drinking alcohol. The best way for you to avoid getting hit by a car when you’re walking is to be aware of the situations that most often lead to pedestrian-vehicle accidents.
To avoid getting hit by a car you need to look both ways before you cross the street. We all agree accidents happen, but stupidity happens as well. I see children disobeying the rule of look before you leap even adults as well. Taking the time to look both ways will save you money on medical bills, incident claims, and a few broken bones. Another importantsafety step that will keep our head attached to our necks instead of attached to a window shield is often missed as well. Do not go jogging on a busy street with headphones blasting in your ears. How can you hear if a car behind you is swerving? If you do go running try to run against the flow of traffic so you can see what’s in front of you.
Like I said before unless you know something the rest of the world doesn’t know you can not outrun a car. Why do grown men try to race a car, and why in the world does the driver even accept this foolish challenge. A quick way to get hit by a car, is to try outrunning one. If you do this please stop embarrassing yourself, and grow up.
Even though pedestrians’ routes are often the same every day (to and from work, the grocery store, school, etc), it is important to remember to be aware of what is going on around you and to follow these simple safety suggestions.
When deciding if freight transportation might be a profitable business, the first thing you must do is take a look throughout your residence. Look at your garage, kitchen or office and find something that didn`t get transported as freight. Once you realize the fact that transportation services is about the most wide reaching industry you can think of, it`s time to decide if you want to attempt to start your own freight transportation business. Being as the industry is so huge, there are plenty of opportunities for even a small start-up to build business and make a realistic profit. The decision you must make is which sector of the industry would be most valuable to you. This created an outburst in the business of organizing the shipments via inter-modal transportation. Tertiary logistical organization of freight shipping is key to the existence and growth of the transportation services sector. Because the sector is so enormous, there is a diverse range of different businesses that all profit and have a role in the inter-modal transportation services sector.
The key player in every shipment involving freight transportation is a freight broker. This individual or firm performs as a middle man to link shippers with freight carriers. They organize the process and figure out how the items will get form point A to point B. The person who sends the freight is the shipper. He operates with a broker to get the cargo picked up and on their way. A motor carrier is the company that supplies truck transportation. These individual positions open up a massive amount of different opportunities that definitely make the freight transportation commercial enterprise to be profitable business venture. The only thing to understand about the inter-modal freight transportation services industry is that it is a consistently altering entity. While each different type of business may seem unassociated, each step of shipment overlaps. Thereby certain entities may direct many of these positions.
I understand that we are not the greatest driver and sometimes make mistakes when driving, however there are some drivers that doing dreadful things. NO TURN SIGNAL-Turn signals are meant to help other drivers understand what you are going to do next. Help us all out by using your turn signal each and every time you are going to turn or switch lanes. WRONG TURN SIGNAL-If you are changing lanes understand which lane you are going to go then use turn signal accordingly. NOT TURNING TURN SIGNAL OFF -It wasn’t until pulled off of the exit that this person finally figured out that their left hand turn signal had been on the whole time and they shut it off.
DRIVING WHILE DOING OTHER THINGS-Putting on makeup, combing your hair, shaving, brushing teeth those are all things you should do in the bathroom. SITTING AT GREEN LIGHTS, RUNNING RED LIGHTS– In the same vein running red lights is simply crazy and dangerous and even with the red light cameras that are out and about I still see so many drivers. I hope that this helps us all to drive a little better. Really it’s just simple rules of the road. Can’t we all just drive together?
