Freight trucking startup Shipwell gets a $10 million boost

A booming American economy coupled with failing infrastructure and a low-margin business reluctant to adopt new technologies have put stress on domestic logistics companies in the $900 billion market for U.S. Shipwell combines a marketplace for shippers to connect with freight companies and online tools to manage those shipments. In effect, the company is pitching a version of the proprietary logistics management toolkit that has made Amazon so successful, to any retailer or outlet. We coordinate the freight, we pay the truckers, we help optimize the fleets, says Shipwell president and co-founder, Jason Traff.

Those services and the companys growing business among small and medium-sized suppliers to the construction industry brought the Austin-based company to the attention of Fifth Wall Ventures, the Los Angeles based investment firm whose limited partners are among the biggest construction companies in the world. Shipwell’s full-service, digitized brokerage platform can streamline the way many of our Anchor LPs and portfolio companies approach large-scale freight shipping, the firms principal and newest Shipwell board member Vik Chawla wrote in a blog post announcing its most recent deal. The companys business isnt for big shippers that deal with thousands of shipments per-day, but rather the small and medium sized businesses that spend $100 million or less per-year on freight. And the small-fleet shipping companies that make up the bulk of the industry.

Beyond these, however, there are easy tie-ins within a number of key categories of Fifth Wall Anchors [sic] that regularly ship or receive freight—developers, of course, but also retail, office, homebuilding anchors. If you are doing $50 million in freight per-year then youre doing dozens of shipments per week, said Traff. Most of our freight is less than a truckload or a full truckload freight and its more long-haul. Supply chains were very complex and there was a lot of building to do, Traff said. Shipwell makes money by charging a commission on freight services and fees for its freight management software platform. This connective approach makes all of the difference in an industry with so many small companies at play, Chawla wrote. A surprising 89% of freight trucks in the U.S. are owned by carriers with fewer than five total trucks, and 99% of freight carriers possess fewer than 10 total trucks in their fleet. Despite the big business of freight shipping in the U.S., it’s actually a fragmented market of small businesses.

Improvement in clearing of shipping containers following complaints last week

Following complaints by the Customs Brokers and Freight Forwarders Association that the processing of containers had been delayed resulting in its members having to pay increased fees, the port extended business hours late last week to clear the backlog.
Mitzie Gordon Burke-Green, President of the Customs Brokers and Freight Forwarders Association, told RJR News on Sunday night that the situation had improved, after the authorities extended the processing of containers by two hours on Thursday and Friday, and a full day on Saturday. On Tuesday, the Association reported a pending crisis because of the delay in clearing containers, which was getting worse due to operational changes at the port..

App-Enabled Freight Platforms Help Small Carriers Find Loads, Boost Efficiency

Large fleets typically have been the first to benefit from the spread of technology in trucking, but digital freight brokers are working to extend some of the same advantages to smaller carriers and independent drivers. Companies such as Convoy, Uber Freight and Transfix have introduced app-based freight platforms designed to make it easier and faster for small carriers to find and book loads and handle much of their business on their smartphones. These digital freight networks still are relatively new to the industry, but they have attracted significant support from investors. Armstrong Associates estimates that freight load-matching startups have drawn about $455 million in funding since 2011, said Haley O’Donnell, an analyst at the research firm.

The investment comes at a time when small carriers and owner-operators are in high demand as the transportation industry contends with tight freight capacity. I think digital freight-matching companies are taking note and really trying to cater to a solid, consistent driver base,” O’Donnell said, adding that the technology can streamline communication and drivers can benefit from quick, intuitive, user-friendly interfaces. “The companies that have been listening to drivers and testing out driver-friendly services are on the right track.” Bob Chappuis, senior operations manager for Uber Freight, said that as the market tightens, connecting shippers with drivers becomes even more valuable. Uber Freight also provides drivers with upfront information on a load’s rate. “Most brokerage firms would refuse to provide a known or transparent rate to the driver,” Chappuis said, adding that Uber Freight sets the price for a load based on supply dynamics.

Amir Shaw, an owner-operator based in Cameron, Texas, started using Uber Freight about a year ago and now uses it to book 90% of his loads. “We don’t want to not be able to make money on a Saturday or Sunday because the broker isn’t answering the phone.” Digital freight brokers such as Uber Freight have designed their technology primarily for small carriers and owner-operators. (Uber Freight) Shaw said he appreciates the upfront information the app provides, as opposed to negotiating with a broker for freight listed on a load board. “That means you’re leaving money on the table.” Besides rates, freight-matching apps typically provide detailed information on each load. “Before I book a load, I know what the load is and if it’s loaded on a pallet or if it is floor-loaded,” Shaw said of Uber Freight. “Knowing the information gives you an opportunity to look at a load on a case-by-case basis and know if it is a good load or a bad load.” Uber Freight aims to pay drivers in less than seven days with no fee.

Turning the tables

With an overarching view to maximising safety for its drivers, clients and the general public, the Glen Cameron Group has specified SAF-Holland G36 fifth-wheels with RECOSS integrated dashboard display status alert on a batch of new Volvo prime movers. Which brings us to the relationship Camerons has developed with fifth-wheel, axle, and suspension supplier SAF-Holland, and specifically its decision to specify a brace of 28 new Volvo prime movers with RECOSS-equipped G36 fifth-wheels. For us, safety is of utmost importance so for some time now, depending on the application, we have been using fifth-wheels equipped with sensor technology that informs the driver, via an in-cab display, whether or not the jaws have locked correctly, says Greg Morris Cameron Group Fleet Manager.
The G36 looks to have the goods and were very keen to try it out to see how it stacks up against our other units and make some comparisons. The G36 units have a longer release handle so the driver doesnt have to reach under as far and its a simple one-handed operation that requires much less effort. According to SAF-Holland, the G36 cast-iron fifth-wheels have a long service life, are low-maintenance, easy to operate and relatively light. As to the ongoing maintenance of the new G36 fifth-wheels, Greg says he doesnt foresee any changes to the regular servicing regime the company currently uses. As for life expectancy, Greg says he expects the new G36 units to last for the life of the prime movers, in line with the other brand of fifth-wheels the company runs.

CLARK COUNTY, IN (TruckingNewsNow.com) (Source: Indiana State Police) — Thursday at approximately 5:13 pm, troopers from the Indiana State Police Post at Sellersburg responded to an overturned semi on the interstate ramp from I-265 WB to I-65 SB in Clark County. Brokers face a more complex decision-making process when putting customers on the rails

As George Abernathy, the chief revenue officer of FreightWaves—and a former president of Transplace, which was represented on the panel by Tom Sanderson, its executive chairman—said, truck traffic that would be “overflow” generally was “handed off to intermodal.” “But that is not as available today,” he said., said if a shipper wanting to use intermodal had not booked some sort of dedicated rail capacity in the current market, they would be looking at spot rates that are up almost 50% year-on-year.
The question, though, is whether a shipper that traditionally has been dependent upon truckload movement can be flipped to moving the business to intermodal if a broker seeks to do that. A broker might tell a shipper that they can convert a truckload shipper to rail and “save them a couple of hundred bucks,” but as the discussion on the panel made clear, a switch to the rails shouldn’t be pursued just for that small savings.
With the recent problems on the rails, even with higher fuel prices and light truck markets, some shippers are moving away from rail and back to trucks. Gore said conversions earlier this year to rail from the road were a “fairly easy sale.” But in the last three months, as rail service stagnated or got worse while trucking rates stabilized—albeit at high levels—transitioning back to the road from the rails was “a little easier for us.”Sanderson noted one area where intermodal has a clear advantage: international business, primarily into Mexico.
The miles traveled are long and getting across the border is a lot easier for a train than a number of trucks. The work of a broker in the intermodal business is far more complex than what that role must do to put a truck on the road. As Menzel said, “many brokers and third parties today don’t have the knowledge of all the moving parts.” It can become a particular problem when detention and demurrage charges pile up at a rate far greater than one might encounter in the trucking side of the transport. “Customers like to receive them even less than we like to pass it on,” LaForge said. Any discussion of brokerage inevitably turns to a question: as technology advances, what’s going to become of voice brokers, whether they’re booking intermodal or a straight truckload run? Evan Armstrong, the moderator of the panel and the president of consulting firm Armstrong & Associates, which specializes in work related to brokerage, said all the focus on apps and digital tools that pass the broker are overlooking the possible role of artificial intelligence. And a lot of that AI is already an existing brokerage house and not in the hot startups being funded by Silicon Valley. Armstrong told of one AI developer that is working with mid-sized brokers—he did not identify it by name—that can read unformatted email truck lists and unformatted emails from shippers requesting trucks in certain lanes and can do it to as much as 98% accuracy.

Reality of a Truckers

Let’s just pretend for a moment, the trucking industry is perfect, all companies treat their employees wonderfully, all driving schools are reasonably priced and give top notch education, and everyone gets sick time and Holiday pay.

Now, you’re out on the road, you’re driving to meet an appointment. You’ve had to really rush to meet your time, but YOU MADE IT. You’re all ready to get going again and get some more “real good” miles for the week. But wait, the next load doesn’t deliver for 2 days and the destination is only 350 miles away. That’s only 175 miles/day…..or about $75.00/day. So you wait and hope your next load is a better one. It is, but the problem is you have to go 600 miles and deliver the next morning. Guess who’s not sleeping tonight? Oh, and remember you were supposed to be home this weekend? Well, you’re not. The load that was supposed to deliver on Saturday AM, won’t be able to accept until Monday early. You’re now out all weekend sitting, alone, and not being paid. (Remember, you get paid by the mile)

You end up with 2000 miles for the week and gross about $800.00. (That’s $0.40/mile) Take out Taxes, Insurance, Cash Advance for OTR living expenses, etc.. and you end up with about $500.00. You’re still out there away from home and you now have to do it all over again.
This is a reality.

Let’s sum it all up: You’ve spent thousands on your CDL. You’ve tried to be a good employee and get to your appointments on time. You’ve gone over on your logs, got a fine from DOT, a company safety warning, and did not go home for the weekend. Still sound good?
